The Beginning of Something New

The Beginning of Something New

To be truthful, I’ve never had a blog before.  I’ve read plenty and have seen my fair share.  But never have I been the blogger.  I suppose the hardest part for any blogger, excluding actually writing, is deciding upon a name.  It is the first thing a reader will see.  Like the title of a book it will either appeal to or dissuade someone from taking that initial step of interest into your life, thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  That’s why I decided upon the name “A New Perspective”.  Because I, ironically, just gained one.
Superficially, there are many similarities between Facebook and blogs.  Both allow the writer to post their feelings and thoughts on different subject matters.  In addition, they allow the reader to respond and express their own thoughts and feelings.   However, Facebook is not as intimate as a blog.  Or so I feel.  Why you may ask?  Because blogs allow the writer to be, potentially, anonymous, therefore, there is a reduced fear of backlash and criticism.  And unlike Facebook, many followers have never personally met the blogger.  This allows the writing to be the sole factor in the relationship between a blogger and a reader.  Previous knowledge is non-existent and the blogger’s personality is solely presented in his/her own words.  I suppose one could say it is the writer’s own mind that a reader finds attractive.
Notice how I’ve repeatedly switched between the words blogger and writer.  In doing so I hoped to convey that both hold the same meaning and can be used in the same context.  Blogging and writing are one in the same.  It’s not all essays and research papers.  Writing, like art, has many forms.  Blogging happens to be just one such form.  A blog is like a journal, but a public version: one that is opening itself to the scrutiny and even praise of others. It is a terrifying concept to be sure, but a rewarding one.

  1. Hey Evan! I like your comparison of Facebook and blogs. I agree with you that Facebook isn't as intimate as blogs are. You made a good point about the relationships between readers of blogs and friends on Facebook. Btw, I like the name you chose. :)
